What about a bolder way to see new posts, like a check in the banner titles of the repected forum. Or perhaps a different color background when there are unread posts since last time you visited the clan's forum. Maybe could put an icon box to the imediate left of the forum thread with some small .gif image for notification.

Here's an example with an ! where there would be new posts.

This one's a bit harder due to the structure of the system. Keep in mind we are managing potentially thousands of forums, so we'll need to come up with a way of minimizing how much tracking data we are storing for this without impacting site performance.

We're not running PHPBB or one of the others, because they don't scale to the volume of traffic or multiple boards like we are designed to support. Our layout is essentially open-ended in volume and design and actually uses three database servers right now, and may expand to dozens later if need be.

I do have some ideas on how I might make this work... perhaps limiting it to tracking just clans you're a member of would minimize the database impact.

You could probably do it without a .gif image. If you added a third column to number of threds/reply viewed there in Pulmyfinger's post. The third column could be number of unviewed or just a smiley or symbol. At that point you would have to start naming the columns, as it would start becoming more than common sense.

This would be very helpful to us in the gamerzvrib forums as well as our clan forums. Perhaps newer forums/posts could at least be sorted by date. I have been a member in a clan in which their forums have a simple texted link that you click on to view posts created since the last time you read the forums. From their you can reply, and go back to view others. They remain new until you logg off. I do believe though as it's the case on their current site that they are using PHBB/NUKE.
